I am guessing by your spelling of councilor that maybe you are Canadian or from the UK?

Where I live (US), in my state, "therapist" is not an official title, it's just a noun for someone who does therapy: This could be a licensed clinical social worker or a licensed counselor. Psychologists and psychiatrists can also "do" therapy but they are usually called psychiatrists and psychologists. I call my therapist a therapist, but officially, she is a licensed clinical social worker. I briefly had a licensed professional counselor years ago, until I moved, and I also called her my "therapist," but she was licensed as a counselor.

In my state, there is a licensing process for both social workers and counselors, if they want to do therapy and get reimbursed for it from insurance companies.
