"Beliefs are opinions and facts supported only by testimony" (www.dictionary.com)
There is no belief worth dying for
There is no belief worth killing for
People use violence:
1. Because they think they lack power
2. Because they think they lack strength
3. Because they are in a hurry
4. Because their particular expectations haven't been met.
5. Because no one has shown them a better way
6. Because they have the faulty belief that they will somehow LOOK BAD if they don't
Coercion is far more subtle and far more common than violence. When the lady raises her hand toward her child with the obvious threat of violence and the child changes their demeanor, the child was coerced by the parent.
Is coercion acceptable public behavior? Never. If the parent must resort to coercion in public, it's already tooooooooooo late. The parent is practicing "un-disciplined discipline" ("The Road Less Traveled"). The parent is lacking necessary parenting skills. Society unfortunately is not ready to tackle this tough and very vital issue. Otherwise the parent would have re-training to commit to, or lose "???something???".
Instead we expect all solutions from the "trench warriors" of children protective services, accepting risk of failure by erring on the side of the "words of the child". Not a complete strategy. Add mandatory re-parenting skills training.
