In reply to elements of self-esteem - for Poet, posted by Medusa on October 12, 2003, at 18:50:38
Hi Medusa,
I'm from the REBT school of thinking (REBT greatly helped me when I found CBT did not really help me) and rather interestingly it suggests that self esteem is _not_ a useful concept in itself mainly as it fosters globally rating yourself and/or others. What REBT does recommend is Self Acceptance which was in your list:>>> 10. Stand by yourself. Accept yourself as you are. This doesn't stop you from improving - accepting yourself is the best way to develop.
That is straight out of the REBT philosophy - never ever judge yourself as a whole whether it be positive or negative judgement.
Anyway I'll shut up now as I wasn't invited onto this post =0) I don't know anyone who uses REBT and hardly any CBT users and I just find the whole thing fascinating =0)
Cheers,
p
