Alternatives to SSRI's?

I have been on SSRI's in the past and did not like them. I had a problem with weight gain and had a real scary experience when trying to go off of them. I would rather not try them again. I was thinking of trying a product called SAM-e and was wondering if anybody out there has any experience or has heard of it?
