Hi Hollygirl,
I know how you feel. The therapist I saw last year always managed to start talking to me about his family, etc., which I didn't mind for about 5 minutes or so, but when you're paying a lot of money to talk about YOUR problems it's frustrating.
I quickly learned not to even mention any parenting issues because if I did, almost the rest of the session was spent with him relaying stories about his kids and how he handled stuff, much of which didn't really end up helping me with my problem anyway. No one wants to pay money to be someone else's venting board!
I tried to gently butt in (is that possible?) and get him to change the subject. Usually he would just look at me like I was crazy (lol) and kept on talking about his personal stuff but occasionally it worked.
