I had read that article in the Times, too. Interesting.

I think I agree about the "mind abhoring an explanatory vacuum". We have evolved as a problem-solving animal and we love to try to explain things and solve problems. (I think that is also why we turn our dreams into stories).

As for reasons for moods, or triggers, I feel for me it is a combination of my moods having a life of their own AND psychological/experiential triggers. I think of it as a transactional system--each affects the other in an ongoing way.
