It sucks- but what can you do?

Posted by Mal on September 19, 2002, at 16:03:45

In this post http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/psycho/20020829/msgs/1031.html Bookgurl99 describes not being taken seriously when she complains of neurological symptoms, because of the pre existing anxiety condition. Unfortunately she is not alone. I am acquainted with a man who was diagnosed with bipolar for many years. When he was taken to the hospital for talking out of his head, the doctors assumed it was his bipolar disorder again. It was actually viral encephalitis, and he now has permanent brian damage. I don't know whether the doctors could have prevented the permanent damage, but it sucks that it is assumed that any psychological problems lie at the root of any complaint. Any thoughts?
