Being There

Posted by BekkaH on August 6, 2002, at 1:03:16

Has anyone seen BEING THERE? It's a great movie, with Peter Sellers, Shirley Maclaine and Melvyn Douglas and is based on the novel by Jerzy Kosinski. It was made in 1979 and was Peter Sellers' last or second to last movie. The reason I mention it on PPB is that so much of the movie reminded me of the transference that takes place in psychotherapy and in so much of life, for that matter. The last line of the movie is, "Life is a state of mind." Peter Sellers plays a dim-witted gardener, who, by chance, becomes involved with some very wealthy, influential people. They (the movers and shakers) think the gardener/Sellers is a genius and a sage, although he is nearly a moron whose entire knowledge of life comes from watching television. They turn him into what they want him to be or what they need him to be, just as patients transform their therapists into characters who bear little resemblance to the reality. If you have not seen BEING THERE, I highly recommend it!
