James, you could get me started on Texas stories. And I totally agree with your statement about taking responsibility. Shortly after moving to Texas I drove to a club in San Antonio for an evening of dancing. Afterwards, I left and decided to take the backroads back to Austin. I got completely lost and drove for miles and miles on country roads till I finally came out on a highway. There was a street sign there that said Purgatory Road. Looking left I saw lights from a business. I was looking for any signs of life to get directions.
I drove closer and heard music and saw the name, Devil's Backbone Tavern. I parked and went inside feeling cold, confused, and tired. Inside, there was a roaring fireplace, people at tables playing dominoes, a dog resting on the floor. The bartender brought around a big plate of fajitas and welcomed me. She invited me to join in the dancing in the dance hall in another room to the side. And told me stories about bullet holes above the mantle that occurred in a gunfight in the 1940's.
Previously I had been a little afraid of Texas, but I changed my mind that night. After conversing with the patrons, getting rested and fueled and getting directions I headed back to Austin, thinking-- this is not a bad place.
