I'm not familiar enough with nafta to comment on the rules.
It is a bit of a sticky one, though. The only case of BSE found in the US did actually originate in Canada, so I can kind of understand the caution. As rare as it is to find the disease in humans, it is such a horrid way to die that a knee-jerk reaction is sort of to be expected.
I was in the UK many, many times during the uproar over there and never stopped eating beef, and still haven't. Maybe that means I have a semi-grasp of the odds?
I'm not sure waiting for Japan to open markets is so politically motivated. I'm more willing to bet it's a way of passing the buck since our inspections are inadequate.
As for the oil and gas? It sounds like a good idea to me. Anything that stimulates exploration in this country helps line my pockets. {snicker}
