It's wonderful to have stumbled upon this site! I'm not new to major depression. Currently in my second bout of it. My first one lasted 16 years, '77 to '93, treated at the Depression Research Unit of the University of Pennsylvania. I was finally diagnosed with a pituitary tumor (Cushings Disease) and surgically removing it at the NIH. My depression was considered secondary to Cushings. Up until then I was pretty much kept "functional" best on fairly high dose MAOI's. (180 mgs Parnate. or EMSAM) I was lucky enough to have been on the clinical trials for EMSAM before it was eventually approved.
My current bout has mostly been going heavy for about 4 years (but probably more like 9 in retrospect.) A lot of what I went through previously has paved the way for my current treatment. I'm on EMSAM for the past 3 weeks, up to 12 mg patch now. Just today (12/5/12) we started augmenting with Tianeptine (Stablon) 12.5 mg/day for the next 7 days. Going up from there if all sits well.
As much as I'm looking forward to feeling like myself again, my partner is looking forward to it even more. Being in the hands of an experienced psychopharmacologist has been the best encouragement we've had in years!
Just wanted to give a brief "where I am" picture. I'm really looking forward to getting to know others here, comparing notes, and helping if I can. Thanks for having me! And thanks for making such a site available, Dr. Bob!
