Carotid Ultrasound HURT !!!!

Posted by Lonely on June 5, 2007, at 23:09:54

Had a carotid ultrasound today because my doc thought he heard a bruit. I didn't think anything was wrong - was just upset w/doc and have heart murmur and the two issues together can cause "funny" things to happen when a doc listens to my heart or carotid. I have insurance so went ahead and had test.

Oh, my! It hurt! Yes! And they said it doesn't! I've had other ultrasounds on other parts of my body that had moments of tenderness or discomfort but really weren't worth complaining about.

This time I felt pressure building up in my neck and into my ear (started having an earache) and my teeth hurt and my neck ached. My head hurt too at the back, I think from the position and because my head and body were not well supported. It was like the petite little tech was standing on my neck although she wasn't by any means. An hour later the inside of my cheek was tingly.

When I complained about it afterward the tech murmured something about sometimes the arteries are buried deep or are in slightly different location. Good grief! She could have caused a stroke just pressing so hard. Also murmured something about having to cut off the blood flow as part of the test.

What in the world went wrong? I don't like this doc anyway and don't trust anything he tells me. I'm planning to get a copy of the report but not sure it will explain why I had so much pain. I'm still somewhat uncomfortable 8 hours later.
