It's a mistake to assume that having a patent means that something works as advertised. It only means it's a unique design or process. I always suspect that using the term 'patented' in the advertising is an attempt to take advantage of this misconception. The U.S. patent office doesn't endorse effectiveness of supplements or cosmetics in any way.
