In reply to Anyone know what my symptoms mean??? Please help, posted by Eric C on October 8, 2004, at 17:55:33
Don't assume it's anxiety just yet. I had some of the same symptoms, and told my docs that I didn't believe their Dx of anxiety (anytime nothing wrong can be found>> Anxiety!)
Read that the GERD meds I take/took can cause problems with B 12 absorption. Started taking B 12 supplements. Was already taking high dose Folic Acid (not good when low in B 12).
After 4 to 5 weeks of taking B 12: had blood tests for Folic Acid, B 12, homocysteine, and methylmalonic acid.
Vit. levels up high since I've been taking them for quite a few weeks. Methylmalonic acid mid-high normal range. Homocysteine VERY HIGH in normal range. What might it have been prior to B 12 supplementation?
I'll just have to wait and see what happens. Should have had blood tests before starting B 12.
Info. from med. article:
"...measurements of metabolites such as methylmalonic acid and homocysteine have been shown to be more sensitive in the diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency than the measurement of serum B12 levels."
"Psychiatric symptoms attributable to vitamin B12 deficiency have been described for decades.[35] These symptoms seem to fall into several clinically separate categories: slow cerebration, confusion, memory changes, delirium with or without hallucinations and or delusions, depression, acute psychotic states, and more rarely, reversible manic and schizophreniform states."Also, B 12 deficiency can cause numbness and tingling in hands and feet, sore tongue, neuropathic type pain, and other neuro. symptoms.(I had all of those).
Good Luck
