Confessions of a produce fanatic!

Posted by Cass on July 19, 2004, at 12:53:49

Being a vegetarian (aspiring vegan), I'm sort of a fanatic about whole foods. Are any of you fruit and veggie lovers like I am? Here's a list of my favorites, some are common, some are not so common:

Dark leafy greens: My favorite by far is ARUGULA. I can eat an arugula salad with almost no dressing. Nothing beats the flavor for me. Coming in a close second is SPINACH. I can eat it by the handful!

Fruit: Well, there are so many, but I'm crazy about CHERIMOYAS (I really splurged some $$ when they were in season.) I also lover WATERMELON. I have it for breakfast a lot. FUJI APLLES are incredible. They are so hearty and sweet. YUM. CHERRIES, GRAPEFRUIT, STRAWBERRIES! An unusual favorite of mine is DURIAN. It's a large, spiny oblong fruit grown in Asia. The outside of the fruit smells like natural gas! The inside is full of cavities filled with a substance looking exactly like custard pudding. It is sweet, rich and delicious. Mmmmm. I found the fruit in China Town, SF.

Vegetables: AVOCADOS taste rich and indulgent, and they add moisture to recipes, so it's at the top of my list. CORN is great too. I eat it raw as I do most produce. JICAMA! The texture is unbeatable! And it's so sweet and watery. I've juiced it with cucumber and it was one of the most refreshing beverages I've ever tasted. One of my unsung heros is TOMATILLOS. I make my own salad dressing, so I juice it and use it as a substitute for vinegar. TOMATOES have to be on my list because one of my favorite meals is gaspacho! I'm making it a lot these days.

Herbs: CILANTRO! The smell alone is literally intoxicating to me. BASIL, so savory! DILL, there's something so centering about it.

Nuts: MACADEMIAS, PECANS, WALNUTS!

Seeds: SESAME. I make my own sesame milk. It's good ice cold. FENUGREEK, it's actually an herb. You can sprout the seeds. It's great to detoxify the liver and kidneys, and your skin and perspiration starts to smell like it after eating it for a few days. It's sort of a maple aroma. No need to use deoderant when you've got fenugreek in your system!
