There's really there's no debate about whether he was a Christian. (There are interesting debates about his most basic beliefs.) Anyway he makes much more sense as a non-Christian. He was going to hang the Pope in St Peter's Square. He had no shortage of enemies to settle with. Aristocrats and the Church among them.
