Maximus, my new friend -
You are mistaken. Many through the years have attempted that same claim... that Jesus didn't exist.
But He did.
As my old friend Lou (not that he's old, but we've been friends for a while now), pointed out... Josephus - a famous Jewish historian - mentions Jesus in no uncertain terms, more than once.
(Thanks, Lou, for beating me to the post!)
Yes, He did exist. Whether you believe that He's who He claimed He is... the Son of God, is a matter of faith.
I also highly recommend Lee Strobel's books, both "A Case for Christ", and "A Case for Faith".
Strobel, an ex-investigative reporter for the Chicago Tribune, was a former skeptic, who set out to DIS-prove the existence of Jesus, and to debunk His claims. He came, instead, to believe. His books go into depth about his search... a most compelling story, to say the least.
In the end, there is no "proof" -- otherwise, there's no need for faith.
But they're certainly worth the time to read them. If only to explore your concept that He never literally lived ...
Shalom, Dena
