maybe it's not our fault... treat medically?

Posted by ciaolavida on August 30, 2006, at 18:12:25

People always say emotional eaters or compulsive overeaters but the thing is maybe it's just in our head! I mean obviously it is but it seems like the blame should not be on us with any eating disorder because it's just as bad as any other psychiatric disease and I think people put more of the blame on the individual suffering.

I'm thinking this because here I am being treated for bipolar and all of these medications are in some ways changing my eating or eating habits. I mean, depakote = complete obsession with food, can't stop eating. Wellbutrin = no desire to eat, can't tell when I'm hungry. Tegretol = eat when I'm hungry, don't think about food all the time though (obviously the best). My point is if it's just a chemical imbalance like every other disease then why aren't eating disorders treated medically if psychotherapy doesn't work?

Just rambling...
