A while back, on a night when only two of us showed up for group, my T had us do mirror exercises. We looked in the mirror, and described what we saw. It was a very disturbing experience for me, and it's kinda still with me. It still kinda jumps up to bite me out of the blue now and again.
Has anyone else done this sort of thing? How was it for you? Did it continue to be strange for you?
What made it so strange is that I looked so much thinner than I am. I go through life with my huge thighs, fat belly, miserable middle aged sagging arms -- and saw in the mirror someone thin, albeit with a fat belly... Since then, at odd moments, my fat will suddenly shiver and I'll see another woman I've just assumed was thinner than I, and suddenly recognize that I'm thinner than she is. (Although, of course, not nearly as attractive, so there's no magic cure involved in this.) Today it happened twice -- once seeing a very young woman from my math class, the second time wondering if I could get between two cars in the parking lot. (The second time, I realized I'm thinner than my book bag. I think it weighs more than I do, too...)
Has anyone experienced anything like that? Did it ever translate to a less distorted body image?
Thanks!
