Is this still normal? Trigger?

Posted by Dinah on December 13, 2005, at 21:04:08

I know that very young children hurt themselves when they get angry or frustrated. But my son is nine now and still does it. Not seriously, but when he gets angry, especially angry with himself, he'll hit himself or knock his head against the wall.

My husband of course thinks it's some sort of genetic trait I've passed on. But he's never seen me hurt myself, he's never seen the results of my injuring myself, and I've never talked about it in front of him.

My husband gets angry with him. I tell him that I love him too much to want to see him hurt, even by himself. And suggest other things he can do when he's upset.

When do kids usually outgrow this?
