Years back, I saw Martin Amis speak, and someone asked him what his father thought about his books? He said that, as far as he knew, his father hadn't read his books -- because he had taken a vow never again to read any book which did not begin, "The sound of a shot split the night air..."
If it was good enough for Kingsley Amis, it's certainly good enough for me!
I read far too many "potato chip books" -- no nutritional value, but you can't eat just one... Right now, I'm on book seven of "The Dresden Files," by Jim Butcher. Amazingly, book six was the best so far, rare for a series. Quite enjoyable books.
Next, I believe, will be "Illywhacker," by Peter Carey... Maybe not a potato chip, but still not meatloaf, if you know what I mean...
