Clean, expensive, well preserved - all those buildings from the Hanseatic League - it was an enormous empire!, I had no idea. And across the Baltic Sea the massive decay and past glory of St Petersburg... well, it was a complete contrast. More civic pride but less to show for it.
I don't really have a rosey-tinted memory of the visit, it was just an extraordinary holiday. Cost tons of money.
