So, I got some tokens from work as a leaving present for Waterstones (my favourite book shop!), so as I'm feeling a bit better (had a stomahc bug) today I took a trip to their Notting Hill branch.
Deciding I needed value for money as my new commute is a long one, (public transport, so lots of reading time!), and I didn't want anything tooo heavy, I bought some books reccomended to me by various people.. I nearly bought a psychology book, and now wishing I had, but I was deserpately trying to only buy books in the 3 for 2 sections *laughing*
Anyway, I'm wandering around, picking books up, putting other books back, and working through the very large fiction section alphabetically. I'm at the "P's", again picking books up, reading the back, putting them back, and a guy standing next to me picks up Tony Parsons new one, "Stories We Could Tell" (hmmm, not on Amazon US yet it seems) and reccomends it.. He even points out its signed by the author. I say its not really my thing, that I'd read the first one he wrote, but wasn't really my cup of tea. Nice guy though, chats away about the books I already have in my growing pile (in my aching arms!), and asks again if I'm sure I'm not going to buy the Tony Parsons book.. I do flick through it, and at the back teres a photo of the author.. realisation clicks in.. as I say "Oh, um.. YOU'RE Tony Parsons aren't you?" A giggle and a nod is my reply as I hope the ground will swallow me up!! He didn't hold it against me though, and reccomended I change one of my selection to a similar but better book!!
One reason I *love* living in London!!!
Anyway.. the books bought in the end are;
"Small Island" by Andrea Levy.. Is next months book in our book club, and been reccomended by alot of people..
"Big Bang, Simon Singh" I'd originally picked up "Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson, but this is the change that was reccomended to me!
"Cloud Atlas" by David Mitchell. A reccomendation from a friend of my mother in law, who has just the same taste in books as me, and all her other reccomendations have been fantastic!
"We Need to Talk About Kevin" by Lionel Shriver. I saw someone here is reading it, and some friends from another site reccomended it.. And as part of my new job I'll be working on a "Mellow Parenting" project, so thought it appropraite
"Oh Play That Thing" by Roddy Doyle. Loved all his other books, so like to read each of his as they come out.
"Wrong About Japan" by Peter Carey.. Short, but looked fun!! And I needed to get one more from 3 for 2 range, and all others that were good I'd already ready!
Then finally, its Penguins 70th anniversary this year, and they have a range of short books out (70 books, one from each year) that are only £1.50 each, so bought from that range
"Idiot Nation" by Michael Moore, and "A Taste of the Unexpected" by Roald Dahl (neither on Amazon US I'm afraid.. sorry.. And can't work out how to do a short link to Amazon UK)
Another book shop is doing those books 5 for £5, so will buy more soon.. some great books in the range, and wish I had the £65 available to buy the lovely box set of them ALL.So, thats my day out today!!
