I do that too.
You know what's helped me most in those periods? "New Scientist" magazine -- as well as the longer articles, which are often well enough written that I can follow them, they have pages and pages of short shots about recent research results. I find it quite soothing, because it both engages my mind and imagination and does it in short enough bursts that I can manage it. Think of it as 'bite sized' articles. ;^P
Also, there are some books that I can usually find my way inside, no matter how bad I am. "A Wrinkle In Time" is a perennial favorite, and probably "Ender's Game" -- although the latter can be too much in some moods.
I'm having trouble, too, but am reading two that just haven't quite gotten me: "Fat: Anthropology of an Obsession," which is good, made up of essays about fat related issues; and "Raj: The Making and Unmaking of British India." Neither quite has me.
I just finished "Me Talk Pretty One Day," though, and that was FABULOUS! I could hardly put it down. Give it a try, if you haven't, and see if that helps.
Meanwhile, Mr X was ordering expensive computer books on Amazon the other night, so I have a stack of potato chips coming, although I don't remember all of them. Let's see, if I remember correctly, it contains:
"Barbary Plague" how racism in my home town allowed the plague to get a foothold on this continent.
"Funeral In Blue," "Death of a Stranger," and "No Graves As Yet" all by Anne Perry.
"Do Penance or Perish" about the Magdalene Asylums in Ireland.
And "Aberystwyth Mon Amour" because Nikki Said So even though I can't pronounce the name...
(I did break down and look them up, so that's the whole list.)
Take care of yourself, dear one.
