Suggestion for book clubs...

Posted by Racer on October 25, 2004, at 0:33:36

Partly Cloudy's book club made me think of this, or maybe it's just another symptom of my mental illness. Whatever, I think this is a brilliant suggestion for a book club, because it offers a chance for some potentially interesting discussions.

Has anyone here ever read anything by Horatio Alger? We've all heard the expression "an Horatio Alger story..." That's part of the American Lexicon, and yet very few people have actually read his stories. They're rather charming, if naive, and quite easy to read. After reading them, as well as discussing the writing itself, the club could discuss such things as whether that sort of thing could possibly happen today, how it would have to be changed -- and whether that sort of thing was ever really possible.

Besides, it would give you a new appreciation for what it means the next time someone refers to an Horatio Alger story...
