I know what you mean. "Homesick Restaurant" I know I liked, since it was the first I read, and I know there were others I liked, but there is a repetetive feeling to her books.

Ok, so here's a wacky and random idea--say we got some folks (by folks, I mean characters) from two other Baltimore writers--filmmaker Barry Levinson and filmmaker John Waters--to step into the plots of Ann Tyler's books. The Levinson people would take just a bit of the edge off of the cynicism and depression, injecting something kind of warm and fuzzy and nostalgic, with just a hint of semi-irony and self-deprecating humor. And the Waters people, well, um, let's say that they'd liven things up a bit?

How do you think the Tyler people would react? (Aside from the character Geena Davis played in "Accidental Tourist" of course, since she seems like she'd be rather at home in a Waters film)
