The reviewer, Michiko Kakutani, criticized the fact that key issues like the Iraq war, the economy, national security, and the election comprise only a small portion of the book, while gossip (sex, drugs, alcohol, and family dysfunction) takes up most of the 700+ pages. Well, of course! There are plenty of other books, newspaper and magazine articles, and TV and radio shows discussing issues of substance. I don't need to turn to Kitty Kelley for that. I turn to Kitty Kelley for juicy gossip. The juicier, the better!

DUH!

Another tidbit: Laura Bush "had been known in her college days [as a student at Southern Methodist University during the 1960's] as a go-to girl for dime bags of marijuana."

Too funny!!!! (I don't think it's any wonder that they've spawned two wild, party girl daughters given both of their histories.)

Kakutani, the NY TIMES book critic, does acknowledge that "certainly family members (particularly George W. Bush, running in the aftermath of the Clinton scandals)invite this sort of scrutiny by selling themselves as a close, wholesome, all-American clan." Frankly, I think that if Kitty Kelley has done nothing other than to expose politicians' hypocricy, she's done her job.

I've become more jaded about all of these exposures. The other side takes them and discredits them by whatever means possible (witness CBS's report on Bush's National Guard record or the branding of Michael Moore as a fringe lunatic). Even when the information exposed is true, the public ends up confused as to what's real and either sticks to their original beliefs or gives up altogether.

At any rate, I'll certainly enjoy reading the gossip (though I'd prefer to do so after the election).
