Michel Houellebecq

Anyone read any of his books?

I read all three that are published here (Platform, Whatever, and Atomised - in that order) in less than a week, about three weeks ago, just as I was going through horrific efexor-induced mood swings and subsequent withdrawal as I came off it.

Reading these (and that week in general) was probably the most emotionally intense experience of the last couple of years for me. These books just strike to the heart of what bothers me about the state of the world and human relationships in general, which may be the root (one root) of my current general lack of hope. Uncompromising and controversial (and satirical?) at tackling big current issues; I can't think of any books I've ever read that compare.

Recommended for anyone feeling alienated from the world, hopeless for the future, and so down. It may not make you feel better, but it's exquisitely well expressed, and strangely there is a large measure of hope and romanticism in there as well - it's just that it gets comprehensively demolished in each case. Just don't tackle them (as I did, being somewhat unprepared for the subject matter - at least, of the first one) when you're periodically in tears anyway.

If anyone's read them I'd love to see your comments!
