Try Love in the Times of Cholera, a fascinating love story of a man who loves the same woman for sixty years. He waits for her, remains obsessed by the girl he met when they were both fifteen. It's something that doesn't happen much in "unromantic" and "realistic" America, but something that happens a lot in other cultures, in other times, in other places.Good luck with it. It's probably his best known work in America.
Try The Magus, by John Fowles.
