Edward M. Podvoll M.D.
HarperPerennial (Harper Collins)
1990Read this ten years ago, found it very humane and compassionate. Helped me to understand WHY we enjoy mania, think when manic that we are well and everyone else is sick, how come we deliberately bring it on with coffee, no sleep, non-compliance and endurance walking even when we KNOW the hardship it will cause.
Chapter 4 "MAJOR ORDEALS OF PSYCHOTIC MIND" was amazing, seeing this mental business of mine spelled out and immediately recognizing its veracity. Made me realize that toying w/ insanity is dangerous (lots of history in first 3 chapters about daring madmen and how things turned out for them in the long run) and that I am somewhat responsible in whether I am sane or insane.
Part 2 is a treatment approach that I just skimmed thru, the first part of the book being all I could handle at the time.
