rIPC for depression and lots of other benefits

Posted by Hugh on May 31, 2019, at 14:17:29

Wearing blood pressure cuffs on your arm and leg for five minutes at a time improves circulation to the brain and increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which regulates dopamine expression and can help to prevent depression, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, Huntington's. This technique is called remote ischemic preconditioning (rIPC), and it also protects other major organs, such as the heart and kidneys.

To do remote ischemic preconditioning, inflate one blood pressure cuff on the upper arm and inflate another cuff on the thigh. Keep them inflated for five minutes, deflate them for five minutes, then inflate them again for five minutes. Do this four times. Remote ischemic preconditioning provides significant protection to the brain and other organs for at least 24 hours, and possibly much longer.

The following appeared in Medical Express:

"Since previous studies have shown benefits to the heart, we wanted to determine if remote ischemic preconditioning could also be beneficial to the brain," said study author Yi Yang, MD, Ph.D., of the First Hospital of Jilin University in Changchun, China. "Our study found such preconditioning temporarily improved dynamic cerebral autoregulation, which is the brain's ability to regulate and ensure adequate blood flow to the brain despite blood pressure changes. We also found an increase in biomarkers in the blood that can be protective to the nervous system and brain."
