Had an interesting chat with my GP recently. She is very open minded, a big believer in continuing education and attends conferences regularly.
She was just at a conference where she had a chat with a P-Doc Researcher about depression-mood disorders. This Doctor told her that she believes Depression is increasingly being shown to be an inflammatory autoimmune disorder (something I have been reading about for several years), and she believes that in future, biologics, like the ones used for Rheumatoid Arthritis, will become the new treatment protocol, targeting the immune system. Research is showing that Bipolar disorder and Anxiety disorders also seem to be associated with inflammation and autoimmunity. There are other studies which have shown links with inflammation & autoimmunity in Psychosis and Schizophrenia.
There has also been some research indicating NSAIDS may help as add-on therapy for depression, again reflecting the inflammatory theory.
Interested in thoughts, comments.....
