NAC is part of my daily supplement routine. It's a precursor to the antioxidant glutathione, but it can reduce oxidative free radicals on its own.
It's given to acetominiphen/paracetamol overdose patients because one molecule of glutathione is destroyed for every molecule of the analgesic metabolized. If liver glutathione levels fall below a critical level, the cells die (apoptosis).
Glutathione is also a critical antioxidant in the brain, so it stands to reason the brain will work better if it is well supplied with glutathione (when compared to a deficiency, which could arise from chronic psychic stress).
Even if no positive effect is noted, it can't hurt.
