I have a fairly good experience with DLPA as an adjunct to medication. I was using 500mg of Thorne Research brand. I couldn't tolerate real high dosages. It does help with depression somewhat. I wouldn't say it is a great antidepressant nutrient. It may work better for some people than tyrosine, but often tyrosine is the recommended amino acid for people with depression combined with l-tryptophan. Refer to Patricia Slagle's 'The Way Up From Down.' It is a good book to get a starting point for treating low moods, but I have some criticism of the book that it may be ineffective for severe mental illness. Sometimes medication is also required, and I have found that certain vitamins are more important than simply taking multivitamins and B-complex vitamins. That being said, if you have mild depression, Patricia Slagle's book may help, but probably is premature for severe mental illness. Looking at individual vitamins and minerals may be warranted in more severe depression, and correct dosing of those vitamins is very important.
