In reply to TOO MUCH FOLIC ACID??????, posted by floridagirl51 on July 20, 2010, at 14:21:23
Thank you both for your input. I am not and was never taking folic acid for depression and do not suffer from this. I began taking the supplement years ago because I learned that it helps to lower homocysteine levels. Many believe that this is a more important number to control than cholesterol, which is my major medical issue as I do have coronary artery disease. It has done that, from 11 down to 7.
I haven't thought about the amounts I was taking until I recently looked at a couple of my supplement jars and saw that one contained 800mcg, and two others 400 mcg each. I eat a good deal of fruits and vegetables as well so I was wondering if there's such a thing as too much.
Now you both bring up about B12. Are you saying that too much folic could deplete one's B12? I don't know if I am low on that and finding out via a bloodtest right now is not possible until I get insurance (my COBRA just ran out). What would be the symptoms of low B12 levels? I do have sublingual B12 tabs (5,0000 mcg), so I could start taking them more regularly if necessary.
Thanks again.
