I actually read this book a few years back. Very informative. It gave me some ideas, but it didn't stress the fact that some people need to tailor dosages of EACH vitamin to individual need. It doesn't always work to take multivitamins. Sometimes you need higher dosages of vitamins than is contained in multis. And I've discovered that complex B's work for some people, but not everybody. Some people with high histamine can't tolerate the folic acid that is contained in multis and complex B's. Folic acid is great for low histamine people, as is B3 and B12, but not for a high histamine person. You really have to look at each vitamin/mineral you take and adjust dosages to fit the individual. It's tedious, but it works. I'm proof of that. Once you discover the dosages that work for you, you just stick with them and take them everyday of your life, and you'll see improvement. Another thing. Amino Acids don't work for everybody. I did have some positive response from L-Tyrosine a few years back. This amino is highly touted in the The Way Up. Tyrosine worked for me once, but not anymore. You have to take high doses of it to be effective, but after my psychosis, I could take twenty 500mg capsules of Tyrosine (Yup! that many) and it did absolutely nothing for me. So it really depends on how severe your illness is. If you have Bipolar or schizophrenia you have to take some medication for the worst symptoms, then after that gradually introduce the nutrients, and you'll see a fair to good improvement, but it may take awhile. L-Tryptophan is also mention in The Way Up. I never took L-Tryptophan, but it is an essential amino acid for everyone. I agree with Patricia Slagel that everyone needs adequate tryptophan in their diets for better sleep and improved mood. Overall, The Way Up is a positive book, but it has some holes in its application.
