Brian, over time I've come to question whether you might have constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C). Why don't you take a look at this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irritable_bowel_syndrome
There are drugs which seem to work very well for that variant of IBS. Of course, you'd need a thorough medical history and exam before a doctor would diagnose you.
Prunes/prune juice are probably safe in any amount you can tolerate. They contain dihydrophenylisatin, which is a stimulant laxative. They also both contain large amounts of soluble fiber. If they clear you out, go for it.
