Flax oil doesn't work for my bipolar

Posted by Lao Tzu on March 11, 2009, at 13:52:52

I recently tried adding flax oil to my regimen, but I absolutely hated it. The only two that work for me are low dose fish oil and borage oil. I try to get a balanced ratio of these two. I find that if you can find these oils in 500mg capsules, you may find it easier to adjust your dosing to what you can tolerate. Eskimo-3 brand fish oil comes in 500mg capsules, and I just love this brand because I found out that I can only tolerate so much fish oil. I'm now up to 5 Eskimo-3 capsules per day. However, I also need omega-6 fatty acids from borage oil. Currently, I take two 1,300mg capsules of borage per day, but I noticed this seems to be too much so I found a brand of borage that comes in 500mg capsules online. For my morning dose, I need 1,300mg, but I'm thinking that for my late afternoon dose, 500mg might be sufficient. You can take TOO MUCH essential fatty acids. The key is to find a balance of the omega-3s and omega-6s. I believe I probably need slightly less omega-6s than omega-3s. It's pretty tricky to determine the right dosage, and it may take several weeks to get used to taking the oils, but I know I have benefited from them from the standpoint of mood, but in addition, my cholesterol is more under control as well.
