I have bipolar/schizophrenia, and I've noticed that the addition of zinc as zinc picolinate has helped my depression quite a bit. I started off taking a low dosage of 11mg, then gradually worked my way up to 22mg, then 33mg. That's where I am today. The Solgar brand of zinc picolinate has worked the best for me. Zinc gluconate doesn't seem to work as well. Of course, I also have to rely on other supplements for my depression in addition to zinc. These include B12, B6, fish oil, borage oil, Vitamin C, B1 (thiamine), Niacin, Vitamin E, and calcium occasionally. Determining the correct dosages that you can TOLERATE is very important. Taking too much or too little of any one supplement will either not help or will only complicate your depression. Finding the correct dosage of each is complicated somewhat if you are already taking prescription medications. It can be a daunting, frustrating task, but the answers are in tweaking the nutrients to meet your individual nutritional needs whether you are on medications or not. It took me a long time to figure all of this out, and you have to keep in mind that patience is of utmost importance as your body is adjusting to nutrient supplementation. You may not see really good results for months, but it will happen eventually. Stabilizing on medication will most likely occur sooner than nutrient supplementation, but I think both are equally important as you journey on your path to wellness.
