No, l-tryptophan probably isn't going to help with energy... L-tyrosine, maybe, but not l-tryptophan.
Tryptophan is converted to serotonin and then to melatonin (the sleepy one) once you consume it. I've heard that more of the tryptophan converts all the way to melatonin if you take it at night, but that's when I take it and it still feels plenty serotonergic.
Tyrosine goes to dopamine and norepinephrine. It's worth a try (I like the Jarrow Formulas brand), but even if you take it over the long term you'll probably want to take breaks... it makes me really irritable after a week or so! Now I only take tyrosine very occasionally.
I'll probably have to take tryptophan breaks, too, but I'm pretty new to the stuff (been taking it for less than a month).
