In traditional Chinese medicine, the herb is known as a male tonic, a treatment for sexual dysfunction and age-related decline. I think a bigger issue is that the product is often adulterated or confused with other Polygonum spp. here in North America. Even the name fo ti was confabulated by an Hawaiian entrepreneur.

I'd consult Chinese herbals, under which it is known as He Shou Wu.
