I wouldn't say don't bother. It has been played in the media as being innefective for anything but mild to moderate depression, however there are studies showing that it is effective in severe depression. It is advertised as only being effective for mild-moderate depression as this is what keeps the "system" in check.

Head to head trials with stronger drugs like paxil have found equivilant results. In a few animal studies, SJW has been more effective than SSRI's. SSRI's often fail in the forced swim test in mice.

Of course it depends on your depression. There will always be people who don't respond to any given drug.

The case for SJW has been rife with controversy and scandal. A few studies procalimed that SJW was no better than placebo, while failing to mention that the comparior drug, always SSRI's also failed in such studies.

I personally know of a few people who failed to respond to SSRI's but responded to SJW.

But, in the end, let the efectivness of the drug quantize itself. Don't let you opinion of how a treatment should work influence how it does work.
