Just an update:
I'm still taking Sam-e (which is some kind of record for me and supplements). I've recently gone up to 1200 mg/day, but I think I'm going to drop back down to 800 mg/day until I figure out what's causing this irregular heartbeat/thumping in my chest (something I've always gotten from time to time, but it's been worse lately).
Anyway, Sam-e has been unquestionably good for me: for my energy and motivation as well as mood. Still, it's not quite...enough. In terms of its antidepressant effects, it feels more like a weak desipramine than an SSRI. Which is to say it (again) makes me feel more motivated and competent, but *not* more clever, creative, spontaneous and friendly.
I'm going to experiment with adding 5-HTP and Rhodolia next (one at a time).
I've read recently that TMG (trimethylglycine) and an extra B6/B12/folic acid supplement is good support for Sam-e... anyone tried that? (All of those are supposed to help the body mop up any extra homocysteine that Sam-e supplementation might produce).
