about positive and negative ions

Does anyone know about this? I've heard that one sort is "healthy" or conducive for a good mood, and the other "unhealthy". I thought "negative" ions were the desirable ones, so why does my air filter have a "postive ion generator" option switch on it? I am confused. So far, I leave that switch on off...
