In reply to how much egcg in one cup of green tea?, posted by mike99 on February 16, 2006, at 11:22:58
I would like to know exactly the same thing. I'm very impressed with Nutraceutical Sciences (NSI) supplements (seem to be sold at VitaCost.com). I looked up their green tea extract (all their vitamins and supplements seem to have the most absorable and most desirable of compounds - not like health food store brands or common brands).
Anyway, that one is standardized 98% polyphenols with at least 45% epigallotechin gallate (EGCG), and I'm going to take the supplement. However, I STILL would like to know how much actual EGCG one is able to get from a simple cup of green tea.

Prepared from the dried leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, green tea is an ancient beverage that's enjoyed for both its simple, soothing taste and for its notable health benefits. Used in China, Japan, India and Thailand for thousands of years, green tea is now reported to be the second most popular beverage in the world, topped only by water.Green tea is produced by lightly steaming, then immediately drying the leaves, a process which prevents oxidation and preserves active constituents in the herb. Besides vitamins and minerals, green tea is a rich source of polyphenols, particularly the catechin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Studies show that EGCG provides powerful antioxidant protection, guarding healthy cells from the damaging effects of free radical molecules caused by toxins, pollution, smoke and UV sun rays.
Green tea may also assist with weight loss. It's believed to help boost metabolism, producing fat- and calorie-burning effects, while also suppressing appetite. Other potential benefits of green tea include maintaining healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels and promoting liver health.
NSI® Green Tea 500 mg is standardized to 98% polyphenols, 80% catechins and 45% EGCG. This means that, unlike other non-standardized varieties, NSI®'s Green Tea contains high percentages of the active constituents, delivering optimal potency in every capsule.
