The key for me is to use a smaller amount and take it only at bedtime. If I feel hung over the next day I reduce my dosage. It feels a bit like a SSRI if I take a lot - there were studies that showed it was effective for the treatment of major depression in dosages the ranged from 2-4G/day - but I don't how the dosage was spread out over the day. I just need good sleep and it helps with my dysthymia

As for the healthfood links - I don't think they have tryptophan - they might have something that contains some tryptophan - AFAIK it is not legal to sell pure tryptophan for humans in the USA.
There are whey products that have a lot of tryptophan in it - as in the medscape article.
