If taken prior to 2:00 a.m. (or whatever the witching hour is), melatonin improved immunity; when taken after that hour, it appeared to impair immune-function, caused an increased incidence of tumors, etc. Does anyone know anything about this?

I'm not sure about the immunity part, but taking Melatonin much too late in the night generally can cause the infamous hangover that so many of us had the joy experience. Also, from what I read at:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=788529&dopt=Abstract,

too much Melatonin can cause depression.
