The substance in Fo-ti (Polygonum multiflorum) that inhibits MAO-B is called emodin. See: http://www.paper.edu.cn/scholar/download.jsp?file=konglingdong-4
As herbs go, it's pretty potent. Hard to know what it's really like to use it, though. Herbs are complex.

There is clear evidence that Polygonum multiflorum extract improves liver glutathione status, so a finding of liver toxicity is not expected.
