Depending on what kind you buy, start with a lower dose, like 150 or 200 mg. For maximum absorbability, try crushing the tablet. It may not dissolve well in water, so I sometimes mix the powder in a spoonful of applesause or yoghurt. Some people say take it with a meal, but in "The Miracle of Magnesium" Dr. Dean says take it on an empty stomach.
Magnesium can easily induce diarrhea, especially when first supplementing, so start slow, but shoot for about 500-600 mg a day at least at first, in divided doses. If you're very depleted you may need to go over that, but then you'll really need to make sure the doses are divided.
Another sure, easy and quick way to get more magnesium into your body is to take a long soak in a bath with Epsom Salts (magnesium sulfate).
