In reply to what to take for menstrual cramps when on lithium?, posted by platinumbride on July 22, 2004, at 23:49:54

Hi,

Whether these herbs are safe while taking lithium concerning ones liver, I am not certain but they worked just as well as ibuporofen for my menstrual cramps. I was happily surprised.

Dong quai root (angelica sinensis), black cohosh rhizomes, roots (cimicifuga racemosa). There is another herbal called cramp bark (viburnum opulus) that is sold for menstrual cramps as well. The U.S.A native black haw (virburnum nigra) supposedly is more potent in this aspect, according to Euell Gibbons. We have several trees on our property and I look forward to trying it for m. cramps in the future, just as an experiement. I don't get cramps every month. I'm 41 and take 40mg Celexa and 250mg Epival (divalproex sodium) for borderline personality disorder.

Medical literature states that ibuprofen is the best choice for menstrual cramps when the other choices include aspirin or acetominophen. That's why I've taken it in the past before I found out the black cohosh and dong quai work just as well. I was experiencing cramps one afternoon, took these two herbals and within one hour my cramps were gone.
